Making life Sparkle since 1856
Our story
Our story starts with our founder Adam Henkell (1801 - 1866).
Adam learned the fine art of making sparkling wine during his years as an apprentice in France. He opened his own sparkling winery in Mainz in 1856 and fulfilled a lifelong dream of bringing together the best of both worlds: the art of French cuvée and the finest German craftsmanship.
A BIG SUCCESS IN A SMALL BOTTLE
In response to post war economic conditions, Henkell invented the small, 200ml bottle in 1935, which is now known as the Piccolo™. Sometimes spelt with a C and sometimes with a K. The busy young waiter called Piccolo™ was more than just an advert.
